Weekly Journal #5 | Impressions of the Olympics

Recently, the topics related to the Olympics have been hotly discussed, and I have quite a few thoughts on it. This week, let's casually chat about the Olympics.

First, I want to clarify that I haven't watched much of the Olympics, and my so-called thoughts come from some fringe information I've seen.

  1. There has been a lot of discussion questioning whether Chen Ruolin is qualified to be Quan Hongchan's coach.

    • My comment is that if Chen Ruolin were a man, these people would all be silent.
  2. Since Zheng Qinwen won the championship, public opinion has recently been swayed to support Zheng Qinwen, using early C and late A to attack and belittle Gu Ailing.

    • This is clearly a political issue, and the emotions stirred up are all fuel for political needs.

    • I didn't know much about Zheng Qinwen before, and I wasn't very interested in tennis. However, after watching her interview after winning the championship, I felt she is very sensible, emotionally intelligent, and speaks English very well, completely different from Quan Hongchan's candid and willful interview style. I saw someone mention that she and Gu Ailing are both on the list of the highest-paid female athletes globally in 2023, and I wish her to earn more money in the future, hoping to appear on the list of the highest-paid athletes globally, not just female athletes.

    • I expressed my views on Gu Ailing two years ago, and my current views are still similar.

A skier "who grew up in the United States, enjoying first-class training facilities and coaches" may not have the standing to express the wish "to inspire more Chinese girls to participate in skiing." But who can resist being charmed by this cheerful girl who loves freedom, refuses to give up, and ultimately breaks the world record in a male-dominated society? Even if one says she is an opportunist playing with politics, let's not forget that playing with politics is not a privilege exclusive to men, and girls don't have to be purely lovable.

    • From a certain perspective, I think the discussion of Zheng Qinwen and Gu Ailing being compared is quite good; there are more women playing with politics, aren't there? I enjoy seeing stories of women manipulating political power.

    • Another thought is that making money from Chinese people is not that easy. If given a choice, don't put all your eggs in one basket.

  3. Regarding Quan Hongchan, who came from a poor background but became an Olympic champion. That's great; it shows that competitive sports have not yet been completely monopolized by wealthy families and conglomerates, and talent will eventually not be extinguished (although from a higher perspective, one could say that sports are monopolized by major countries; if Quan Hongchan were born in a country like Andorra, even with such talent, it would be useless). I hope for the best things in this world and that we do not lose hope.

  4. In this Olympic Games, the number of women's events and the total number of female medalists are greater than those of men (if you don't believe it, go check the statistics yourself at https://olympics.com/zh/news/paris-2024-team-china-medalists-overview). Historically, there have mostly been more women than men. I won't elaborate further. I wish all the sisters great success in their sports.

  5. Regarding competitive sports

    • One important reason I initially had a good impression of rock climbing was that I heard it was not included in the Olympics. But since the Tokyo Olympics, competitive rock climbing, surfing, skateboarding, and BMX have been added to the Olympics. I don't like competitive sports; if I have the opportunity in the future, I can think more clearly about this and discuss it further.
  6. Chang Yani and Chen Yiwen are killing me with their chemistry. Young people are really brave and wonderful. Please, you two, living well together is more important than anything else.
